It makes no sense to me. Most assault weapons are less powerful than hunting rifles, and aren’t even the choice weapon of criminals (.20% are used in all violent crimes and a mere 1% in gun crimes). Not to mention that criminals don’t care about following the laws. They will still have weapons, one way or the other. Banning assault weapons is absolutely idiotic to me. I have every right to own the AR-15 in my safe. What logical purpose is there for banning assault weapons when so few are even used in crimes? What’s next? Is there going to be a ban on all guns? Knives? Baseball bats? Staplers? A sock with a bar of soap in it? Anything can be used as a weapon, so where are the dems in office going to draw the line?

Jindal/Palin-No more like 8 or 9, but yet I haven’t killed anybody. That probably has to do with the fact that when I was young, my dad taught me how to responsibly handle a gun. I have handled them for years, and have never had any kind of accident.
Volleyballchick- First of all, you say you have no problem with pistols. Assault weapons is just a broad term that includes certain pistols and shotguns, as well as rifles. I have an AR-15 for target practice as well as protection. Assault weapons are great to use for target practice to improve aim for hunting, so a precise kill shot can be made that will not cause the animal to suffer.
Rurouni79- I can get a 1 inch group easily with my Bushmaster. They are very good for target practice.

Because they are a symbol to the liberal public, that’s why. It has nothing to do with crime prevention or safety. Beside the Libs here obviously know nothing about guns. 800 rounds per minute!? LOL! A Ruger mini 14 is not considered an assault weapon but if you change the stock (which has nothing to do with the rate of fire) it suddenly becomes calissified as an ‘assault weapon’. Ta Da!

They are made for one reason – killing humans. They are not used to hunt deer, birds or anything else. They are created for war – killing humans. Why does that need to be LEGAL??
I think if one can JUSTIFY owning a gun – which hunters can do just that – then I am fine with it. Even hand guns I am okay with. I won’t own one, but I see why someone would want to own one. But I don’t understand why someone would think that their right to own an assault rifle outweighs my right to want to live without worry of someone killing me.

There is no ban or proposed ban on assault rifles, and an AR-15 doesn’t qualify. You know that. It’s a simple bait-and-switch for the ignorant to fall for, and it worked the first time.
can you give me a good reason for having an ar-15? i am a liberal gun owner slinging a tactical shot gun because there are far too many heavily armed people in this country for me to use my longbow against. who or what are you planning on assaulting? what need do you have to fire 800 rounds per minute? who are you waiting for? if you have a right to own an assault weapon then do i have the right to own a rocket launcher? how about a fully operational anti air craft gun with shells? where does it stop with gun rights? at what point is enough fire power enough fire power?
edit: with a firing rate of 800 rounds per minute a single clean shot sounds kind of moot. might i suggest bow hunting if you wish to hone skills?

All the REAL hunters I know would never dream of hunting with assault weapons. OR shoot wolves from a helicopter. Real hunters dropped out of the NRA years ago when the republicans took over making the organization political. Actually, the hunters are very civilized and great sportsman. We did have a neighbor a few year back who was from Texas and was infatuated with fire.
But, you probably need weapons in Texas…there is a lot of weird crazy crimes committed there! But come on…assault weapons. If those crazy people know you have assault weapons…look out! Sorry only the military should own those!
Yeah, d**m right. Just the other day, I saw the Crips and the Bloods getting it on. They were all stapling each other together. When the cops got there, they pushed "em all over onto pallets, and drove "em to jail on a fork lift.
the problem is they keep throwing more and more weapons into the assault weapon category. it used to be only full auto’s were illegal, now it’s just whatever looks scary. it makes no sense to me, because highly powered sniper rifles can do an large amount of damage, whats a better crime then never being at the scene? it’s like they never did any research on it.
